New Vietnam 2026 Formalities: Don't panic, we explain everything about the new mandatory health declaration!
Hello to all travelers and Vietnam lovers!
If you are planning your next trip or your return to the land of motorbikes and iced coffee, take two minutes to read this. There is something new in the air regarding entry formalities, and to save you from a cold sweat at the airport in front of immigration officers, we have decoded everything for you.
Starting July 1, 2026, the Vietnamese government is implementing a brand new mandatory health declaration system at the borders.
Don't panic, it's very simple to understand. Here is everything you need to know to coast through customs!
► What is this new thing? (And who is concerned?)
To put it simply, it is an administrative process to keep an eye on public health and prevent epidemics from ruining the party.
The rule is the same for everyone. You are concerned if you are in one of these situations:
-
You are entering Vietnam (tourist, expat, returning from vacation).
-
You are leaving Vietnam.
-
You are simply in transit at a Vietnamese airport or border post.
Basically, as soon as you cross the border, you have to do it!
► The timing: When do you need to make your declaration?
This is THE most important point to remember about this new rule:
You have a maximum deadline of 7 days before your trip to fill out the form.
Don't wait until you are standing right in front of the plane, but don't do it 3 weeks in advance either. Note it down carefully in a corner of your travel planner.
► How does it work concretely? (The "User Guide")
For once, they did things right, you have two options depending on your style:
-
The modern option (Electronic): You log on to the official Vietnam health declaration website, fill out the online form quietly from home, and get your QR code. This is the option we advise 100% to save time upon arrival.
-
The "last minute" option (Paper): If you have a technical glitch or forgot, you can get the official paper form from the Ministry of Health directly upon arrival at the border post. But honestly, queuing with a leaking pen after a 12-hour flight, we've known warmer welcomes!
And what about the language? No need to speak fluent Vietnamese, rest assured. The form is fully bilingual Vietnamese and English.
► What information is required inside?
Nothing too mean, it's standard information. Get your documents ready next to you, you will be asked for:
-
Your identity: Full name, date of birth, sex, etc.
-
Your papers: Nationality and passport number.
-
Your itinerary: The countries you have visited recently and your means of transport (flight number, etc.).
-
Where you are staying: Your residence address or hotel in Vietnam.
-
Your health status: If you have had any strange or suspicious symptoms in recent days.
-
Your vaccines: Only if the Ministry of Health specifically requires it at the time of your trip.
► What to expect at the border controls?
Once there, the border health agents do their job. Depending on the case, they can:
-
Scan you with a thermal thermometer (the great classic).
-
Ask you a few questions about your journey.
-
Do a quick clinical exam or ask you to isolate for a moment if they have a serious doubt about an infectious disease.
Basically, we play along, stay smiling, and cooperate with the agents; it always goes super well when we act in good faith.
► A quick word on responsibility (We don't mess around with this)
Vietnam is a super welcoming country, but when it comes to public health, they don't joke around. Fill out your form with honesty and accuracy. Lying or hiding information on this document can expose you to heavy legal sanctions, in addition to blocking your entry into the territory and wasting everyone's time.
► Any doubts? Need the official text?
If you are afraid of landing on a fake website or want to check the source yourself, you can take a look at the complete infographic below.
You will even find the QR code at the very bottom that links directly to the official government decree if you like administrative readings!
Have a great trip everyone, prepare your declarations well in advance, and see you soon around a good coffee! ☕
